The first thing I saw when I arrived to C Battery was a guy with fair-skin and blonde hair coming out of the barracks with only a towel over his shoulder, shorts and flip-flops - in February! I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into. I was housed in Kuhlsheim shortly after arriving as the barracks in Hardheim housed mostly MP's. I worked "down range" for a bit after looking for my bucket of "blue status" (lol); eventually ended up working in the Motor Pool in my secondary MOS (76C). Bliss, we were destined to go to Germany, we heard, didn't know where, (didn't know anything, really) we took the required training, went to White Sands and in spite of ourselves, got close enough to a target that they scored it a Hit. AJAX days
we met pretty much as a group after our passes were up at McGuire AFB for a (in those days) quick ride to the airbase in Frankfurt, rejoined our duffel bags and a deuce and a half trip to Karlsruhe (Gerzewski Barracks to meet the troops of the 552nd AAA (90mm gun) who were not overjoyed to see these "missile kids" come in to disband their outfit and become the 3rd Missile Btn of the 73rd, some joined us, most went on to other jobs and posts.
But all of us stayed for a short while at Gerzewski, My Battery "Bravo" went to Kornwestheim, Wilkin Barracks which had recently been refurbed waiting for us, we were supposed to be a mobile outfit in the 7th Army, probably not exactly the fine definition of mobile, but. 60 years ago, memory has mellowed, times have changed, not many of the original group left, miss them all. I just noted on this site that my battery 1st Sergeant, John L. Tedder was deceased. 1Sgt Tedder had as much impact on my life, both in the military and in my civilian career, as anyone I have ever known. When I reported to the battery, fresh out of ROTC and the Nike School at Fort Bliss, Top "sat my * * * in a chair" in a chair in his office, told me to "shut up and listen to him (and the other NCO's and Warrants)and not to speak out until I knew what the hell I was talking about". Sage advice that I followed to the letter! 1Sgt Tedder taught me more about managing people and how to treat people than any book I ever read and any management training I ever attended anywhere. Top was a "good old boy", chock full of wisdom, hard-earned experience, and just plain old common sense. I loved the man, and I mourn his passing. John Tedder was the kind of man the professional military is and was built around. I just hope that when he got to the Pearly Gates, he didn't tell God to "sit on your * * * on that golden throne and listen to me." Although it's 50/50 that he may just have done that. In the history of Kleingartach there is a problematic topic: The closing of the site in 1969.
Known date is the official closing in July 1969; but a soldier tells me that he came in April 1969 to C 3/71 Hardheim, and nobody there knows something about Kleingartach.
I guess that Kleingartach was really closed in March/April 1969, together with 1/67 sites.
Two notices: Knows anybody the effective deactivation date or the time frame; and the reason(s) why, and especially Kleingartach, was closed?
Who can provide records or further helpful informations, references, tips and so on regarding my first notice?

We have two sons and 6 grandchildren.I retired from the army after 22 years in Sept 1979.I Retired at Ft Bliss I was the First Sgt at A-4-1 basic training, the first battery to have OSUT. After retiring I went to the local community college and got a degree in HVAC. I retired from Honeywell after 20 years in 2003 then went back to work for Honeywell one day later as a contractor and worked for another 9 years. My last assignment in Germany was C-2-1. I had the honor of being the launcher platoon sgt. We had a unit with some of the best NCO's and officers I ever served with. In 1977 the unit fired out at Crete with a 99% the highest ever fired at Crete at that time in the 94th group, we kicked * * *.

We now live in Colorado Springs , Co. We spend time between our mountain home and our home in the springs. We built a log home in 1987 near Cripple Creek, Co to enjoy the mountains and the view it is beautiful country. Helga and I keep busy with different activities, her working with animal rescue and I keep some what busy playing softball with in the local senior league.
I wish I had made the reunion here in the Springs it would have been fun.

I grew up in Brackenheim and do still live in this region (exactly Lauffen/Neckar 10-15 km from there).

A great compliment for the initiator, Dean Jonasen, for this documentation. Due to friendship (1960-1961) with Bill Griffin, nick-name "MAC" (because formerly Marine Corps), I had contact with the comrades, did also frequent the caserne, and even once the launching area (per hasard - causing big trouble for Bill - but we (he) did not care...).

I remember having got/bought the very cheap cigarettes, occasionally Whiskey from Bill and also other guys....many memories...!

It was great for me to discover names and images of comrades, as for instance Marion Naeger (very good in German language/even dialect of our region), or Bill Zeien enjoying the "Moninger" Bier in the forest-guest place… –

Again a big compliment to Dean for the accuracy and detailed descriptions - even historically - of the region and villages over there. Arrived Rhein-Main AB fresh from MP OSUT at Ft. McClellan, AL, processed thru 21st Repl. and got a long bus ride to Kornwestheim for inprocessing at the 3/71 ADA Bn HQs - the "Dragon Battalion."

While at the HQs I met my best friend for the next 14 months, SPC Eddie Washington. We inprocessed and were assigned to C Btry and after a couple days they put us in a van for another long ride to Hardheim. When we stopped at the company/barracks we thought, because it was such a small place, we were stopping to fuel up. We were a little surprised when the driver got out and told us to unload our bags.

It was an inauspicious start, but I served with some great people who were a blast to work with (Scott Lisk, Wilbur Combs, Chuck Letourneau, Eddie Smith, Paul Martin, Steve Teeter, and so many more whose names I no longer recall) and a few I'd rather forget. Although I was glad when the site inactivated and ended the 24 hour day on day off guard schedule, it was hard to see friends leave.

I stayed as the Tac Site security force and became part of 6/52 ADA (Hawk) for the next 3+ years before leaving in December 1986. During my time there I met and married my wife and had my first son. We returned to the U.S. in October, 1960. M/Sgt Butler spent the remainder of his military career at a Nike base near Austin, Texas as First Sgt. And retired in 1963. He died in 1971.

My dad's records were all lost in a major fire at the records center so I was trying to put together a history of his military career using the Internet when I ran across his name on the Thanksgiving pamphlet on this website. From there, with Dean's help I was able to piece it all together for his Germany tour.

Now I still have to get on to his stint in WWII Pacific Theater (Leyte amphibious assault and the invasion at Okinawa) and the Korean War where he was with the first troops sent from Japan to stop the advance of the North Korean invading army. He was most fortunate to be alive to spend his tour in Germany. We were happy to provide Dean with a few photos he used on the site. The chapel photo from Heilbronn was where we attended church and was taken out our picture window in the apartment. May 17, 2012 0 0 70.112.227.228 James P. I was happy when I have seen the old pictures of Niederhofen and the other villages. Now I am 53 years old. I was born in Kleingartach and now I live in Niederhofen since a lot of years. When I was a young boy I visit the soldiers in the barracks with my friends. They gave us chewing gum, chocolate and coke. We liked it very much! Our friend from the soldiers was a black men, he was a doctor. He have to go to vietnam, but don't know his name. Germany-- I worked, (also skillfully avoided work), plus "pulled guard" in the Launcher area- a.k.a. "the animals". I was the "A" Section panel operator / launcher crewman and LCT panel operator / cross trained in the IFC).

I also drove my beloved "super tuned" 5 ton truck ( C-28) which I meticulously, and delicately painted with a broom.

I only have contact with one of my buddies, Pete "killer" Nault, of Ishpeming MI, so if you can help put some of us back in contact, it would be wonderful.

We discussed our recollections of the Germany we experienced in our youth, scarcely 15 years after the conclusion of WW II. Amazing experiences and responsibilities for youthful American G.I.'s. I have recollection of a couple of the names on the "Charlie" manning roster that Dean prepared. The person I have the greatest recall of was CWO Blanchette (sp?). We (Ordnance) seemed to have more interaction with him than others at 'C" Battery. Oh, yes, I also recall your Mess Sergeant Otto who always did a great job of feeding the visitors to "C" Battery, too.

Dean, thanks for all the hard work you've done in developing this site. Great photos of the towns and very interesting "Google Earth" photos that add a unique perspective to times gone by. Your shot of us in formation in front of the barracks reminded me of something rotten I did. We were having a rifle inspection there once. OCILLA, GEORGIA BILLGRIFF@WINDSTREAM.NET DEAN,

THANKS FOR THIS WEB SITE.WE HAVE A LOT OF PICTURES AND HISTORY OF THE 3RD BN 71ST ADA,AND TO HAVE AN ACCOUNT OF CHARLIE BATTERY FOR THE PERIOD 1959-1961 IS ESPECIALLY EXCITING. IT REQUIRED A LOT OF WORK AND COMPUTER SKILLS ON YOUR PART TO PUT ALL THIS TOGETHER. IT'S AMAZING THAT AFTER FIFTY YEARS YOU HAVE BROUGHT THIS INTERESTING SITE TO THE INTERNET AND MADE IT AVAILABLE TO THE GUYS WHO SERVED DURING THAT TIME.

FIFTY YEARS TAKES US BACK TO THE TIME WHEN WE WERE YOUNG WITH HIGH ENERGY AND SOMETIMES DO SOMETHING A LITTLE CRAZY.

I REMEMBER A FUNNY THING THAT HAPPENED TO CHARLIE BURGESS AND GERALD TYNE. THEY WENT TOGETHER AND BOUGHT AN OLD GERMAN CAR. ONE DAY THEY WITH TO GERMAN GUYS WERE DRIVING THROUGH THE COUNTRY AND WERE DRIVING TO FAST FOR ROAD CONDITIONS RAN UP ON A CURVE AND COULDN'T MAKE THE TURN,RAN OFF THE ROAD HIT AN APPLE TREE AND KNOCKED THE APPLES OUT OF THE TREE. THE OLD GERMAN FARMER SUED BURGESS FOR THAT CROP OF APPLES.

WE HAD A GREAT TIME AT THE '08 REUNION IN BRANSON SWAPPING STORIES. SOME OF THE GUYS TOLD SOME TALL ONES.

I WILL VISIT YOUR SITE OFTEN HOPING TO FIND A NOTE FROM SOME OF THE GUYS.

BEST WISHES BILL GRIFFIN July 22, 2010 0 0 98.18.87.207 Jim Fitzpatrick Pittston Pa jimbo199@verizon.net Thank you Dean for this great site this all started 50 rears ago and here we are comming together again.
